Sappho – 98a, 98b

My mother told a story
Of a girl with yellow hair
Wrapped in purple cloth,
With embroidered flowers,
As if to imitate
A crown of flora.
Yet a girl with her hair and beauty,
Should have
The real thing.
She didn’t see the fact
She didn’t need a crown of flowers
To be beautiful.

I have no such
Hair, no such beauty,
No such headband, no such crown.
Yet you’re still mine,
And I’m still yours.
